How To: Pill A Cat That Doesn't Want To Be Pilled

Printer-Friendly Format

For all you cat lovers out there who have ever been called on to pill your cats, I feel your pain. It can be a daunting task, especially if your pet doesn't want to be pilled. Liquid-equivalents aren't always the answer either, since most adult cats will salivate and spew the liquid all over the place when you try to give it. So what's a cat owner to do?

Here's one method that I've found to be very effective:

1) Purchase a cheap plastic pill crusher from the local drug store or pharmacy and pulverize the pills. If the medication is in capsule form, this has already been done for you.

2) Next, mix the crushed medication in a dab of butter or margarine to make a small volume, palatable mixture for administration. Don't use too much butter – just enough to bind the crushed medication.

3) Lastly, hold your cat by the scruff of the neck (don't worry, this will NOT hurt your cat), dip your finger in the mixture, and swath it on your cat's lips. Your cat should lick the medication right up. Repeat this action until the complete dosage has been administered.
