As mentioned previously in another article, in some areas of the country, heartworm preventive medication is given on a seasonal basis only during the warmer months when mosquitoes are a problem. However, there's a solid case for owners to give the medication year-round to their dogs, regardless of where they live.

There's a great reason for this and here it is:

This is the eye of a child infected with a roundworm larva. Sorry to be so graphic, but this is serious stuff. People, especially children, are at risk of roundworm infestations secondary to exposure to puppies and adult dogs that harbor these parasites. The good news is that the majority of monthly heartworm preventive medications on the market today also protect against roundworms and other intestinal parasites. As a result, keeping a dog on this medication year-round will not only protect the dog, but will protect its owner as well.
